Exploring Iceland's glaciers

spatial data visualisation R rayshader QGIS

These glacier maps were created as a fun exercise and imagined as a blog post aimed at tourists keen to hike around Iceland’s glaciers.

The first map was plotted using QGIS and provides an overview of the hikeable glaciers around Iceland using glacier data from Natural Earth.

The second map is a 3D visualisation zooming in on Eyjafjallajökull and Sólheimajökull, with elevation represented by colour and height. Additional data on roads, nearest cities, and facilities were also layered on to give a sense of directionality. The 3D visualisation was created using the ‘rayshader’ package in R and the elevation data was produced by the National Land Survey of Iceland and the Polar Geospatial Center.
